  • 03 February 2010 - Mavado “Gully God” dissapointment

February 2, 2009 marked the first appearance of Mavado aka Gully God appearance in Edmonton. Like other reggae artists his live “performance” was live and crystal clear, but I feel fell short. Over the past few years I have seen a variety of music artists (Elephant man, Sizzla, Jay-Z, Kanye, Beyonce, Talib Kweli) and it seems like this show was anything, but a show.

To set things straight, Mavado is one of my favorite music artists with countless dope tracks and righteous tunes, but his performance was weak. He had no story, or connection with the crowd. Whenever he made reference to the crowd he called us Canada and not Edmonton, which had me confused. He simply jumped from one hit track to another with no direction, or focus. With so much material to use Mavado could of easily been one of the best concerts of 2010. His intro was soft and simply walked on and sang a random track. Rather then a intro it seems like Mavado just got on stage and sang a song he felt like singing as if it wasn’t planned. His finale was even more disappointing when he finished one of his singles and walked off stage in the middle of it with no outro. No thanks to the fans, no love from his Edmonton supporters, not even a good-bye.

I paid to see a show, yet I have heard better sets put together by local sounds. I don’t know about you, but I would of enjoyed myself better if stayed at home and played my Walshy Killa Amazing Grace CD. With the amount of material Mavado can use to put a set together he has no excuse for such a disappointing “concert”.

On another note its nice to see Reggae artists are on the fitted tip. That baggy shit is dead.
