Mavado “Gully God” dissapointment
Posted on 03 February 2010
February 2, 2009 marked the first appearance of Mavado aka Gully God appearance in Edmonton. Like other reggae artists his live “performance” was live and crystal clear, but I feel fell short. Over the past few years I have seen a variety of music artists (Elephant man, Sizzla, Jay-Z, Kanye, Beyonce, Talib Kweli) and it seems like this show was anything, but a show.
To set things straight, Mavado is one of my favorite music artists with countless dope tracks and righteous tunes, but his performance was weak. He had no story, or connection with the crowd. Whenever he made reference to the crowd he called us Canada and not Edmonton, which had me confused. He simply jumped from one hit track to another with no direction, or focus. With so much material to use Mavado could of easily been one of the best concerts of 2010. His intro was soft and simply walked on and sang a random track. Rather then a intro it seems like Mavado just got on stage and sang a song he felt like singing as if it wasn’t planned. His finale was even more disappointing when he finished one of his singles and walked off stage in the middle of it with no outro. No thanks to the fans, no love from his Edmonton supporters, not even a good-bye.
I paid to see a show, yet I have heard better sets put together by local sounds. I don’t know about you, but I would of enjoyed myself better if stayed at home and played my Walshy Killa Amazing Grace CD. With the amount of material Mavado can use to put a set together he has no excuse for such a disappointing “concert”.
On another note its nice to see Reggae artists are on the fitted tip. That baggy shit is dead.

I very much agree with you!!! It was nice to see a reggae artist perform at a new venue, change is good! For his own promotional sake that show will definitely give him props for stage lighting and crowd numbers, but from my perspective I agree that his story board and concept overall for this particular show was weak.
For such a talented artist you would think his genius would have been highlighted and expressed to really show us who he is and represents where he’s from as an artist, “Gully God” if you will, not comparing in any way but the “Energy God” (Elephant Man) gave us exactly what we asked for. Mavado could have sang for hours without shortchanging the audience on tracks, they needed more crowd hype, and dancing instead we got a lot of dead stage time, a lack of crowd interaction (you know everyone wants to see some girl get up on stage and make a fool of herself, lol, just playing).
To top it off I got a really fast and sad exit, I looked down, then up and he was gone! No good bye, no thank you, no PICTURES!! Even though it was worth it for the money I paid, I still fell a little robbed.
I wish we could have gotten to see more excitement from such an awesome artist!!!
I agree 110% robert!
I didn’t like him refering to the crowd as “canada”. He was not connected to the crowd AT ALL. Not to mention having to wait until almost 2am for him to decide to show up and preform. granted it wasn’t a quick 20 minute show, but still singing the chorus of almost all his songs makes the show seems really rushed.
his end of the show was horid…
none the less, it was still an alright show…but your right i would rather have stayed home and listen to Cashmoney sound mixtape and saved myself the $50 + gas lol
Sizzla, hands down, has been the BEST dancehall performance i’ve seen to date!
I am surprised that it was such a “flop” of a performance! I wonder who will be the next artist to hit Edmonton?
just came across this add i was the opening act for movado and that was just maybe a ten minute act ,and was only my only act for that week but i think you guys are for getting the quality of he live voice that movado gave to edmonton i mean
he sound just like the cd and believe me that is hard to do
yes he could have jump around or interacted with he crowd more we can say all that but the fact is that this guy perform at lease 8 times in Canada eight straight days now
i don’t see much pehople who can last that long doing any thing eight days straight eg try making love for eight days straight for 2 hours and tell me that every hour off that eight is as good as the first second and so on to be honest i think the crowd was star struck there was no energy to motivate him to try harder and give him that fire
that we artist feed from but this my opinion and i say he did a good job in the space that he had . did you see the size off hat stage any it was small and the crowd is space out from it all theese things need to be look at too i was up here and i was hard for me to jump around but i try my best all am saying his next time mavado comes maybe a bigger space and a little more energy from the crowd and am sure gully god will do the rest
and another fact is that on like some artist he gave us all his hits with good sound quality know you want to talk about lazy fambo was lazy i cant even remember one thing he did
for all i know he was not even there stight gully
